COLCHESTER TOURNAMENT REPORT: April 21

The U15s, given the absence of a number of regulars, sent a ‘Development squad’ to the Colchester RFC Tournament and, although results in the five games failed to go their way, they can reflect on the fact that it proved a very worthwhile exercise (April 21).

As it proved to be a great opportunity for the newer/fringe squad members to get some significant game time in a competitive and fun environment, and despite a number of players cast in unfamiliar positions, their spirit and enthusiasm never wavered throughout.

As already stated, the results didn’t go the way of EIRFC, as all five games were lost, although on another day the results could have gone the other way, and particularly the narrow defeats against Chelmsford (0-7), Mersea Island (7-10) and Stockwell Park (5-7).

The defeat against Mersea Island was particularly galling as, with EIRFC on the brink of victory following a length of the field interception score from Tommy, the blue and golds were cruelly denied by a last minute try from the Essex side.

All matches followed a similar pattern, with Enfield dominating territory, and having more than their fair share of possession, but, more often than not, they were unable to translate pressure into points.

The sun may have made a welcome appearance, but otherwise the windy conditions also hindered EIRFC’s passing game which resulted in some unfortunate handling errors at key moments.

Still, the U15s scored three tries with Philip dotting down in the 22-7 loss to Sudbury. This proved to be a well-worked try, and one preceded by multi-phased build-up, before the opposition try-line was breached for the only time in the game.

Similarly, another great passage of play against Stockwell Park saw space open out on the right, and Jaden capitalised on the overlap opportunity to cross the line, in a game in which a mere two points separated the sides at the final whistle.

Ignatians also suffered a 21-0 reverse to Wymondham in a excellent Festival whose organisation proved to be very slick.

A team spokesman summed up: “ The coaches weren’t concerned with final results, preferring to dwell, instead, on the positives, and namely [the performances] of our inexperienced players, including those making their debuts.

A big mention [must go] to Adrian who made a fantastic debut. Making good yardage with ball in hand, he [was also] solid in defence, [having produced] some immense tackles for someone new to the game.”
