On their first outing this season, the Pulsars showed that though the legs may me yard slower and the hair thin and grey, that class still showed.
With gratitude to Barnet who took on the fixture after the original opposition cried off, the game kicked off with the Pulsars having the benefit of Storm Desmond at their backs. However the Pulsars decided not to take advantage of the howling gale and run the ball at almost every opportunity. As a result Barnet were under pressure at both set piece and in the lose play. Resulting from such pressure, the Peter Pan of the back row, Chris Lyons pounced on a lose ball in Barnet's in-goal area to claim the first try.
The Pulsars continued to put pressure on Barnet with the forward playing a strong "Pick and Go" style, with James Galea and Sean Donnelly at the forefront (ably assisted by Sparkles sponsored by a major pain killing pharmaceutical company before he had to leave the field of play). It was not surprising that the second try came from the barn storming Dan Howarth, following a period of dominant forwards' pressure - so it was 10-0 at half time.
There was some concern amongst the spectators that the Pulsars had not taken enough of the wind advantage in the first half as the Barnet fly half began to pin the home team back in their own half. However the old school warriors were made of stern stuff and a "fast" break down the blind side and some slick passing saw Pete Reddington over in the corner.
Barnet came back strongly in the last quarter and scored a well deserved try, inspired by the evergreen Sean Harris at full back. However the Pulsars hung on till the end for a well deserved victory.
In the bar after the game saw the traditional recognition of valour on the field of play: Man of the Match - Dan Howarth: Champagne Moment AND Comedy Moment - Leighton Thomas dislocating his finger in the warm-up: and a raffle which raise £300 for the local food bank for Christmas.
The next game is at home on February 27th when the opposition is Cheshunt.
