Southgate 1s: 7 - Enfield Ignatians Pulsars: 27 - The Vets March On

Despite being a horrible wet and windy day, nothing could stand in the way of a Pulsars side determined to take full advantage of the warm up opportunity ahead of the upcoming cup matches. Southgate 1st XV could contain the venerable players in the Blue and Gold hoops.

Following a fast paced start (a desperate attempt to keep warm!) the Pulsars took advantage of a penalty under the sticks converted by the boot of Dean Gardener. Then, in true Ignatians fashion, the game developed in to a pack dominated affair, with three tries coming from rolling mauls off the top of line outs - poetry in motion. The ever youthful James Power, Christopher Grilli, and captain fantastic Chris Lyons claimed the tries, with one converted by Dean Gardener. The backs were not as impressed as they struggled to keep warm.

Twenty points up and still thirty minutes to play, the Pulsars decided to turn on the swagger, but had not fully accounted for the biblical level of rain which had poured down for the entire game. There were plenty of handling errors and one from one of the side's most consistent and dominant players, Sean Donnelly, this led to a fantastic solo run from the Southgate centre. 7 - 20. "Game on", the home crowd thought. Alas it was not to be as the Pulsars continued to dominate play and took up camp inside the home team's 22. .

With Man of the Match (no picture available!) Chris Bayliss crushing every Southgate play and making some great runs, it wasn't long before the ball was popped to Shane O'Brien for a final score, converted by Dale Gardener.

7 - 27 game over and the Pulsars winning streak goes on. They also won their first ever boat race The game was played in great spirits and Southgate were amazing hosts. It was fine tribute to Southgate legend Tony Bew who passed away recently. As always, the Pulsars support a local charity, in this case "The Nightingale Trust".

A spokesman for the team said "This was great preparation for our cup match against Old Streetonians next month, and we did not miss Wes Silva or Jon Cunningham at all."
