Cameo Performance Inspires Victory in the Sun

The Pulsars continued their winning streak with yet another victory away at Belsize Park.

The 19-7 score line doesn’t reflect the dominance of the Pulsars team, but they can only have themselves to blame with a handful of wasted opportunities.

Pulsars started brightly and were almost a try to the good within the first 2 minutes, only for the ball to be spilled over the try line when it seemed easier to score. Pete rose immediately replaced Bill William for comedy moment of the season.

In true pulsars fashion they kept up the pressure and set up camp in the Belsize ‘22, with barrage after barrage of thumping runs. Eventually the pressure told and Dean Gardener ran over unchallenged for the 1st try of the match, which he subsequently converted.

With about 10 minutes of the half remaining, the evergreen Martin Baker entered the field for a cameo appearance. As he made his way onto the park, the tune of "Steptoe and Son" could be heard from the treetops. Nonetheless his opposite number soon found out what years of experience brings and the scrum dominance continued. As he left the tune of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" echoed over Regent's Park.

The Pulsars flow was surprisingly interrupted when their fly half, Chris Byrne, was sin binned for aggressive rucking. Unfortunately the rucking turned out to be on his team mate, John Georgiou, who was left with stud marks on his knee and could be heard squealing, very typical of a back when they find themselves amongst the big boys. The referee did not seem to care for Georgiou’s pleading and off went Byrne.

The Pulsars turned up the pressure in the 2nd half and two scrum turnovers resulted in 2 tries. The first for Dean Gardener’s 2nd try of the match after driving his way over the line after the turnover on the ‘22. The second saw the Pulsars play the ball out to Bill William on the wing who showed pace to beat his man before calmly playing a 15 yard pass back inside to allow Chris Lyons to run in and finish acrobatically under the posts.

The Pulsars were cruising 19-0 at this stage and could have pulled further ahead but for some poor decision making leading to passes going to ground.

Belsize kept plugging away and got their reward with a try that started near the half way line and was finished with an audacious dummy that allowed them to cruise in unchallenged.

That left the game at 19-7 and that was how it finished.

Captain Fantastic Chris Lyons commented while it was not our best ever game the lads certainly know how to turn it on when needed. What we have got here is very special and what I want more than anything is to walk forwards and lift the Middlesex vets cup."

The Pulsars are at home for their next game on 10th November (KO at 1.00pm before the England v New Zealand ) against Grasshoppers, and they know they will need to up the anti for that Middlesex Vets cup quarter final game.
