Enfield Ignatians 61 - Cheshunt 10

On a weekend of high scoring European quarter finals rugby, Enfield Ignatians followed suit with a 61-10, 9 try victory over local rivals Cheshunt. Cheshunt were short on numbers so huge thanks go to Matteo, Dylan and Vinie for joining the opposition.

Enfield started strong with Berkay and Teddy both being held up over the try line in the first five minutes. Despite Enfield’s dominance, Cheshunt scored a try on the break thanks to a strong run by Matteo on their right wing – 0-5 to Cheshunt.

Enfield regathered themselves after going behind and remained camped near Cheshunt’s try line. The pressure was beginning to tell with multiple Cheshunt kick outs to relieve pressure and this time Patrick being held up over the try line on 11 minutes. Eventually, the territorial pressure told as Cheshunt tried to pass their way out of trouble on their own try line and following a strong tackle by Ollie G and the ball going loose, Donie pounced to score – 7-5 to Enfield.

The second try on 18 minutes was a lovely move off a clean Enfield lineout, which was passed through the hands for Hayden to bundle over. This was converted by Partrick who quickly scored a try of his own on 22 minutes with a typical strong run down the left – 21-5.

As half-time approached a re-start by Cheshunt was taken well by Berkay, unfortunately a Cheshunt player was a bit too keen with his mistimed tackle. The man keeping the peace in the middle deemed a yellow card was appropriate and Cheshunt were down to 14. Berkay dusted himself down and within 2 minutes had burst through the middle to score and the half-time whistle blew – 28-5.

Enfield scored again within the first few minutes of the second half. Enfield had a penalty near the Cheshunt line and despite vocal advice from the sidelines to move the ball out wide, the scrum half knew best as a simple pass to David, who barged passed 3 opposition players, led to a touchdown – 35-5.

Ciaran who had been running and tackling hard all game got his reward with Enfield’s 6th try. Following a lineout on the left, and a strong run from Adam, the ball was moved through the backs for an easy touchdown, 40-5. Within a few minutes from the restart, Donie read the play of the Cheshunt fly-half and intercepted the ball for an easy try – 47-5.

Whilst Enfield were in complete control, our runners were not being supported and the physicality of Cheshunt meant there were several turnovers. Midway through the half, from a turnover, Cheshunt got a second try – 47-10.

Enfield were not finished yet and there was time for two more tries. The first came from deep within Enfield’s half. Adam turned the ball over before Ollie G, Patrick and then David made good ground moving into Cheshunt’s half. David offloaded the ball to Ollie H who showed a great turn of pace to run in Enfield’s 8th try sprinting down the left. Following the restart, the ball was taken by Donie who floated a beautiful pass to Ollie G who ran the same line down the left to score a well-deserved try. The final whistle blew; 61-10 to Enfield.

A satisfying result against a very strong and physical Cheshunt team.
