STEVE RENNY, the EIRFC President, had thought his playing career was over, but recent events have catapulted him back into the thick of the action again after representing the Hertfordshire Super Vets team in the 24-22 away loss to their Sussex counterparts at St Francis RFC, Crawley (October 25).
Plagued by a troublesome knee injury, the second row/backrower had laced up his boots again, albeit with a little trepidation, as part of the EIRFC President’s XV which took to the field against Cuffley at Donkey Lane on October 18.
Having come through that game unscathed, he needed little persuasion when asked to hook up with Herts Super Vets [Over 50s], and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience – particularly as he lined up as part of the starting 15.
He said: “I played the first 20 minutes in the second row, and after coming off as we rotated the squad, I then came back on again and played 40-minutes at number eight.
“Everybody in the squad got on really well with each other. The rugby was certainly tough and I was very sore after the game. However, it was certainly a very enjoyable occasion both on and off the field.
“Interestingly, we had an excellent French referee, Christophe Rivet, who refereed the game to a tee. He oozed Gallic charm and his English was perfect.”
The dynamic between the referee and the players was clearly excellent with the official’s Facebook posting reading: “It was a privilege to share and enjoy the afternoon with people who really appreciate the values of our beloved game. By the way, nobody smelt of elderberry.”
Clearly, Moose Snr won’t take much persuading if getting the call up again from the Herts selectors. He’s the third member of the Renny rugby dynasty to don the blue of Middlesex and the green of Herts, having now emulated the achievements of his sons Ethan and Euan. Where the sons go…Dad shall follow.
