IRISH DREAM...MOVES A STEP CLOSER

NIAMH GALLAGHER continues to state her case for Six Nations’ Selection by representing the Irish Women’s’ U20s side which beat the All-Ireland League One outfit Wicklow 30-24 in a trial game at Ashtown Lane, Wicklow, last Saturday (April 20).

The St Ignatius College Sixth Form pupil is ultimately hoping to be drafted into the full Irish rugby squad which will contest the Six Nations Tournament for the above age group from July 2 to July 14.

She said: “It was a very enjoyable game and, as you can imagine, the standard was a very good one. I was tried out in two positions, having started the game at inside centre, before being moved to fullback for the last 20 minutes.”

There will be two further Irish squad sessions – after which the selectors will finalise the Emerald Isle Six Nations squad. The player added: “I won’t be able to make the May session because of my ‘A levels but I’m planning to attend the June session.”

The utility back has already attended two Irish squad sessions, and she has added to her burgeoning rugby CV by playing provincial sevens rugby for Ulster in the wins against Munster and Leinster, and the defeat against Connacht. Exciting times ahead.

(SENIOR RUGBY) Meanwhile, four Enfield Ignatians players, Hadee Fayaz, Farhad Fayaz, Matt Georgiou and Tom Buckland, have been drafted into the Cyprus squad which will face Malta in the European Conference Pool D game at the Tsirio Stadium, Limassol, on 4 May.

(JUNIOR RUGBY) The U14s entertained regally in a helter-skelter game against Fullerians, but ultimately they were on the wrong side of the ledger following the 36-33 loss in a friendly played at Donkey Lane on Sunday 21 April.

Trailing 17-5 at one point, Ignatians mounted a sterling second half fight back to lead 33-31, only for a late try to seal it for the visitors.

They can now look forward to the May Bank Holiday Tour to Kent from May 3 to May 6.
