MIDDLESEX GIRLS U18S 5 ESSEX GIRLS U18S 34
Local rugby continues to be well represented at girls county level, and following on from the triple representation against Hertfordshire, an Enfield Tigers quintet stepped up to the plate in the Middlesex U18s team which took on Essex at Grasshoppers RFC on Sunday 15 February.
For the record, the Tigers’ five were Georgia Georgiou, Chloe Sullivan, Eliza Sibley, Abi Afuwape and Daisy Webb.
Faye Summers (Old Grammarians), having represented the county against Herts, was another to feature again.
The result didn’t quite go the way of the blue and whites on the 4G surface, with Middlesex suffering a 34-5 reverse, although this was certainly one to file under the honourable defeat category.
In a hard-fought game, Middlesex, having trailed 20-5 at the break, were certainly not out of it, but the more clinical Essex managed to stretch their lead, having put the game to bed via a couple of converted breakaway tries.
Not that Middlesex didn’t have their chances. As they battered the Essex line on four separate occasions – only to come away with nothing.
Enfield Tigers’ head coach, Tom Mann, also very much involved with Middlesex, said: “It was a really enjoyable game of rugby. Both teams showed attacking intent, with the Enfield players showing their worth inside a strong and capable Middlesex team.”
Doing some further number crunching, the Enfield Tigers’ connection at this level is in fact seven players as Emily Mann and Selma Tivnann have also been called up to Middlesex ranks this season.
There was no doubt that this has been a tremendous experience for the girls both off and on the field, and one that will no doubt stir some fond recollections for all concerned in the years to come.
(Women’s Rugby) The Enfield Tigers women’s side broke new ground by undertaking their maiden voyage in the Inner Warrior Series, having clustered with Epping Upper Clapton and the Finsbury Park Panthers for the occasion (Feb 15).
The combined side played two 30-minute games against Basildon and Brentwood. Both were lost by identical scorelines, namely 29-0.
Claire Butcher, part of an Enfield Tigers sextet involved in both games, said: “Four players had never ever played contact rugby, and so it was an awesome achievement [in terms of giving it a go].”
The Enfield Tigers contingent comprised Claire Butcher, Alice Twist, Claire Chapman-Fossey, Hannah Carroll, Sade-Jade Williams and Sasha Muzzlewhite.
