(JAN 11) The U16s, the unbeaten leaders in Herts-Middlesex Division Three, took another step towards the title with a resounding 59-20 win over Hemel Hempstead in tricky
conditions at Donkey Lane.
Despite the wind and the cold, the U16s' very fluent style saw them gallop into a 24-5 lead, and although the visitors, to their great credit, eroded the Ignatians lead to four points, the hosts found another gear in their hour of need by surging clear with a five try flurry.
The U16s scored nine tries via Harry H (two), Sammy (two), David A, Ciaran, Ollie S, Patrick and Cian. Patrick (four) and Harry H (three) added seven conversions between them.
Very pleasing on the eye, and confident ball handlers from one to 15, the U16s are a great credit to the coaching team of David 'Alfie' Hitchcock, Steve Corcoran and Dale Gardener.
They have two remaining and crucial leagues games (away to Welwyn on February 8 and at home to Verulamian RFC on March 1), but, before then, they are seeking more game time, as they're planning a fixture (tbc) against Ruislip on January 18.
Star reporter, Rob 'Hold the Back Page' Painter, will provide a more in depth analysis of an entertaining encounter later in the week.
Similarly, the Senior Academy also harbour title ambitions in their league, Herts-Middlesex Colts Five, and they, too, were also on the money after lording their home friendly against Chess Valley 39-19.
In a game in which the Senior Academy loaned the visitors four players, they cut loose after a slow start. The try scorers were Josh C (three), Luke R, Ryan, Ben M and James V. Ben M also added two conversions.
The Senior Academy currently occupy top place in their division with Aylesbury, and they will only be too acutely aware of the importance of the away game against Staines on January 25.
In common with the U16s, the Senior Academy have two remaining league games - they conclude with a home game against Harrow on March 1 - although ultimately their title ambitions could be dependent on what happens elsewhere.
(GIRLS) The Enfield Tigers U14s won beat a combined Harpenden/Stockwood park team. 20-15
The Enfield Tigers U12s pooled their resources with Woodford and Old Albanians, and the combined team played some quality rugby against Finchley.
Alice did the blue and gold contingent proud by crossing the whitewash, and there were also strong performances from debutant Robyn, Olivia and Phoebe.
The Enfield Tigers U18s lost 45-15 to Old Albanians. The final scoreline probably isn't a true reflection of the difference between the two sides. Again, some great rugby was played.
Well done girls.
