EIRFC wrote a new chapter in their history by staging their first ever senior woman’s team fixture following their clash with Finchley at Donkey Lane (September 6), writes Jonathan Landi.
Earlier, in the day the Enfield Tigers U16s gave a typically spirited effort but were ultimately outgunned 50-0 by a very slick Welwyn outfit.
Both the hosts and visitors alike will have had the opportunity to sample the new look and revamped changing rooms, which puts the club in the enviable position of being able to simultaneously stage men’s/women’s rugby matches.
It comes on the heels of the visit of RFU President, Deborah Griffin, who officially unveiled the new facilities to a discerning audience at the Donkey Lane on Friday evening.
The first ever female president of the RFU, Deborah certainly has an interesting background, having been a past captain of Finchley woman’s team amongst others. She’s also the recipient of an OBE.
A founding member of the then Women's Rugby Football Union in 1983, she was also instrumental in organising the inaugural Women's Rugby World Cup in 1991.
She became the first woman to sit on the RFU Council in 2010, in addition to becoming the first elected female RFU Board member in 2014. She has also sat on the World Rugby Council.
