(Women’s rugby October 31) Niamh Gallagher, the former Enfield Tiger, was part of the Irish women’s team which gained a historic 2-0 series win over South Africa following the 38-17 victory in Cape Town on Saturday (October 31).
Drafted in at fullback, Gallagher played a full 47 minutes as Ireland, having withstood the physical onslaught of South Africa, rebounded strongly by shading their opponents 6-3 on the try count.
It marked the first time that the Irish women’s team has wrapped up a test series in South Africa after adding to their 40-27 win against the same opponents a week earlier.
(Girls rugby: November 1) The Enfield Tigers U16s, adding to their win against the Canvey Valkyries, shaded a 39-35 thriller against a Saracens – Old Grammarians cluster team at the Bramley Sports Ground.
The Enfield Tigers U12s clustered with Old Grammarians for their trip to Hertfordshire, and after losing to Bishop’s Stortford, they recorded a respective win and a draw against Hitchin and a Hertford cluster team at Verulamians RFC.
County protocols prevent us from reporting scores in U12s games.
(U13s) The considerable potential of the U13s was unleashed to good effect against Letchworth, and, despite being a few bodies light on account of injuries, the squad exploited the full extent of their rugby arsenal by dominating doughty opponents.
Attending well to the basics, the hosts, having competed sturdily at the breakdown, successfully muzzled their spirited rivals by making their tackles, before applying the finishing touches in the form of some excellent finishing.
Not that the final scoreline tells the whole story as, despite the bright beginnings, Letchworth came back strongly and, having sighted the Ignatians’ lead after making good use of their physicality, were a bit unlucky not to have drawn level.
However, Ignatians were in no mood to relax their grip on proceedings, and their ability to constantly stretch their rivals in all directions once they had reclaimed possession, yielded excellent dividends as they eventually pulled clear on the scoreboard.
For the record, the try scorers (not in order) were George, Ty’an, Keyan, Suvir and Noah, but needless to say each player played their part in a performance which augurs well for the future.
Charlie (as voted by the opposition) was the Man of the Match.
The squad is drawn from a number of local schools, with St Ignatius and Enfield Grammar, Wren, Arc and St Mark’s (Harlow), all forming part of the blue and gold supply chain.
(U14s) The U14s’ training game against Old Grammarians (friendly) on the first team pitch was played out in three acts, with the hosts initially suffering on the scoreboard as the very slick visitors relentlessly filled their boots.
However, part two turned into a more even affair as, with the visitors sportingly loaning a couple of their best players, a more meaningful contest ensued, although OGs very fluid approach continued to speak loud and clear as they scored three tries without replay.
Act three saw the two teams come together in unison with a view to working on some set moves, which it is hoped will stand both sides in good stead prior to their next league assignments, with Ignatians due to host Barnet Elizabethans.
(Senior Academy) A much changed Senior Academy line up suffered a 52-0 away reverse at Epping Upper Clapton.
