The hard work undertaken by U14s during the summer paid off in spades as it enabled them to beat Letchworth 33-24 in what proved an away thriller in Hertfordshire.

The game wasn’t sure to go ahead in the preceding days but, with both sets of coaches concurring that the pitch was safe enough for contact, we had a game on our hands with visiting Enfield Ignatians edging the first-half 12-7.

Letchworth twice threatened to steal Ignatians’ thunder by after getting their noses in front, but the blue and golds were in no mood to roll over, as on each occasion they rebounded strongly on the scoreboard to eventually secure victory.

Eddie was the Man of the Match following a bonanza display which yielded four of his side’s five tries.

Rocco, having excelled in his role of flying fullback, also crossed the whitewash.

George also clicked from the tee after rifling over four of his five conversion attempts.

Special mentions also go to number eight Noah, following a dynamic display at the back of the scrum, and rugby debutant Eden, who didn’t put a foot wrong on his introduction to the game.

Coach Scott Fitzgerald said: “When Letchworth twice came back strongly to take the lead but our boys never gave up. Our fitness levels and all the training we did during the summer {clearly paid} dividends.”
