CYPRIOTS LORD IT IN THE BALKANS

A Cyprus team, featuring Enfield Ignatians’ Hadee Fayaz, came up trumps in the Rugby Europe Sevens (Conference two) tournament which took centre stage at the Topolica Metropolitan Stadium in Montenegro last weekend (June 15-16), writes Jonathan Landi.

The Cypriots set out their stall in the pool stages, and after a very close shave with Slovakia (26-24), in which the two teams were only separated by a mere conversion, they mastered Montenegro 38-21 and Kosovo 35-0.

This resulted in the islanders progressing to the semi-finals and, following a further dominant performance, this time against Slovenia (25-0), Cyprus progressed to the final where an exciting rematch with Slovakia awaited them.

However, a confident Cyprus weren’t about to let opportunity pass them by and, in another close encounter, they edged their rivals 3-2 on the tries’ count, to claim a memorable 19-12 win.

Hadee Fayaz has enjoyed some memorable moments in his Cyprus journey, and namely in 2023 when he claimed his first international try against Malta in the 15-man game.

He said: “It proved to be an amazing experience. To be involved in this set-up which has some great players, and to win a trophy, has an unreal feeling [to it]. Given that it was Father’s Day, too, I just had to call my little ones straight away to celebrate with them.

“Sevens is normally well and truly out of my comfort zone, but I gave it a good crack and am just pleased to be able to walk away with a gold medal, and to have helped the national team win promotion to Conference One Rugby next season.”
