A Hertfordshire U20s side, featuring Enfield Ignatians’ Cairo Sango, had its ambitions of reaching the Twickenham final ended following the 22-12 defeat by Lancashire at Cheshunt (April 14).

However, it has been another worthwhile journey for the Ignatians’ youth graduate who made some fine tackles against tough opposition which included players from some of Britain’s historic clubs.

The former Enfield Grammar pupil also played in one of Hertfordshire’s three pool games (all won), as well as featuring in the county’s 28-19 quarter-final victory over Cornwall.

Not that the player’s county journey has ended quite yet. He said: “After the game, the selectors informed Josh Milton [Welwyn) and myself that we had been called up to the Hertfordshire senior county squad.”

For the record, the Hertfordshire senior squad will be contesting the County Championship in May when games against Hampshire, Cornwall and Gloucestershire are scheduled.

Cairo Sango added: “I like county rugby as it enables you to push the boundaries as a player and it gives you exposure.”

Also part of last season’s Herts U20s squad which reached made the last four of the 2018 County Championship before defeat to Yorkshire, Sango’s journey with age grade rugby has effectively ended.

However, he is very much aspiring to new horizons. He added: “I’m will also be taking part in the South-East trials [Easter Sunday at Cheshunt] which is the pathway to the England Counties side.”

He also played with distinction for the Enfield Ignatians’ senior side, and one of his more memorable exploits is to have scored four tries against Belsize Park in a league game.
