U16S NEWS: PLAYER AWARDS AND REFLECTIONS ON ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON

A real band of brothers ambiance has been prevalent at U16s level. Back-to-back title winners, it’s worth reiterating that theirs is an unique achievement particularly as they moved up a couple of divisions this season to Herts-Middlesex Division Three, writes Jonathan Landi.

This age group held their end of term bash at the clubhouse on April 17, and the various player award winners were as follows:
• Ollie G (centre) - Players’ Player of the Season
• Henry (flanker) - Parents’ Player of the Season
• Hayden (second row) - Coaches’ Player of the Season
• George (Scrum Half) and Archie (Hooker) - Jack Petchey Award winners

Some of the current squad will be departing to pastures new, and we would like to wish Vinnie all the best for the future, as he embarks on an army career with the Royal Engineers after ten seasons spent at the club.

It’s remarkable to think that he was on board the initial tour to Holt in 2019. Accordingly, he was the recipient of a signed card and shirt to mark that particular landmark, and he was also gifted a unique EIRFC branded camo-t-shirt following his decision to join the army.

The successes of this age group can be quantified as follows:

• A 100 per cent record at Herts-Middlesex Division Three level, having accumulated maximum points (35) after winning all seven league games.
• The ability to topple higher league opposition (second-division Ruislip) when at full strength.
• Honourable showings against first division outfits such as Hertford (41-33 loss).
• Developing an exciting playing style which entailed being prepared to run the ball from all parts of the field; very high risk at times but ultimately rewarding.
• Strength in depth in terms of squad numbers and excellent team spirit. This was undoubtedly pivotal in the U16s successfully bridging the gap from Herts-Middlesex Division Five to Herts-Middlesex Division Three this season.
• Excellent parental support and PR provided by Rob ‘Hold the Back Page’ Painter and Dave ‘Feet of Flames’ Howley.
• The coaching panel of David ‘Alfie’ Hitchcock, Steve Corcoran and Dale Gardener also deserve plenty of credit for their efforts in getting the best out of this age group.

Parental appreciation for the efforts of the coaches saw each of the trio presented with a framed EIRFC youth section shirt, signed by the players, to mark winning the title. “It really is a very special gift which will be treasured by all of us,” said Steve Corcoran.

Given that they’re a talented group of player’s there’s little doubt that they will become even better players should they continue on the current trajectory, and perhaps some of them will even feed into senior ranks?
