Enfield Ignatians commenced their league season in emphatic fashion securing a comprehensive victory away win against Chess Valley. Despite very challenging wet conditions, the team delivered a dominant performance, scoring nine tries and
earning a well-deserved bonus-point victory.
The match began with Enfield asserting early control although initial handling errors and a lack of breakdown support hindered scoring opportunities. On 10 minutes, Chess Valley had worked their way up the field and Enfield showed excellent defensive resilience to ensure no try was conceded. Eventually the pressure was relieved with Henry driving the Chess Valley forward back 10 metres and subsequently causing a well-deserved tumover. Enfield quickly got on the front foot again and the pressure eventually paid off when David A opened the scoring
with a well-executed try on 18 minutes, converted by Patrick to make it 7-0. Shortly after, Donie returned a deep kick with a powerful run, and the ball was moved out wide setting up Patrick to score in the comer and extend the lead to 12-0. By the 35-minute mark, Enfield's backs combined effectively, allowing Sammy to cross the line and push the score to 19-0 at half-time. The second half saw a notable increase in intensity from Enfield.
On 43 minutes, Sammy's kick through was chased down by Liam, who scored to secure the four- try bonus point. Five minutes later, Ollie G added another try following a strong carry from Altamash, bringing the score to 31-0. Hayden added a sixth try on 55 minutes with a quick tap-and-go, before Chess Valley responded with a well-earned try after sustained pressure, narrowing the gap to 36-5. Enfield quickly regained momentum. On 64 minutes, Ollie H made a clever switch of play, resulting in Matte scoring in the corner. Patrick converted
superbly from the touchline to make it 43-5. On 65 minutes, Isaac's sublime kick over the advancing defence was collected by Ciaran for a try. Just two minutes later, the same duo repeated the move, sealing the final score at 55-5.
While areas for improvement remain - this performance sets a strong foundation for the season ahead.
Enfield offer our thanks to hosts Chess Valley and wish them well for the remainder of the season. Ignatians U16 now turn their attention to their next fixture against Rochford Hundred.
