It was a sad start to the morning's rugby at Romford, when a minute's remembrance was held in memory of the tragic loss of life of a Romford and Gidea Park RFC U13’s player who had died suddenly during the week. The young players, coaches and parents held a minute's applause before the rugby commenced. Enfield Ignatians send their condolences to all the those affected by this tragic situation.
Following the minute's applause there were cracking games of rugby played between evenly matched sides in all age groups. Plenty of tries, tackles and fun were had by all.
The Under 8s showed how much both sides had progressed during the season. Possession was contested strongly and both sides showed confidence in moving forward with fantastic passing. The young blue and golds faced their biggest challenge this season.
The Under 9s continued to show how their skills have progress in this their first season with tackling. All players have really developed and there were plenty of tackles and loads of tries. When individuals play like a team, all do their bit: some tackle more, and others run more on a big pitch. It is always difficult therefore to single out individuals but special mention goes to Donnie, who was playing only his second game for the team. Also, by consensus, the champagne moment of the morning was Vinnie's try, scored from inside his own half!
The Under 10s enjoyed the fine and warm Sunday morning and walked away winning 3-0 in games against a spirited Romford side. Remembering there is no I in team, all the boys had to work hard for each other to compete against a physically larger team. As one proud parent commented, "One of the most gutsy displays I've seen so far this season - well done to all the boys"
The Under 11s played with a depleted squad due to half term and after 3 x 15 minute games, narrowly lost 6 - 5 to a strong Romford team. Some great tackling by the blue and golds kept them in touch for the whole game and when they moved the ball through the hands late in the final match, they scored a great try. The stand out players were Ben, Jay, Oran, Luke and James
There was lots of running in the first sunshine of the year, but a good morning of rugby with plenty of smiles all around, and a fitting tribute to the core values of rugby in such sad circumstances.
