A Mighty Saracens Style Performance

By Rob ‘Hold The Back Page’ Painter

50pts on the board, eight tries, just the one conceded and an all round cracking performance in the sunshine. We could be talking about Saracens who the boys saw play at Spurs on Saturday (with the same stats!) but no, it was the boys in Blue and Gold that mustered a 50pt haul at Donkey Lane on Sunday.

We only had to wait four minutes for the first try. Cian scoring after good runs from Liam S and Cian himself before the ball was recycled
back to the big lad to finish 5-0.

The backs were putting the ball through the hands well and running into space in the early stages of the game and we escaped our 22 with a combination of Patrick, Donie and Ciaran. Then further up the pitch good hands were shown again before George chose power, feeding Teddy who barged through three defenders to score. 10-0 13mins.

Cian then scored his second with a naughty finish - an exaggerated dive! Good passing again from Patrick, Donie, Ollie G set up the try. Patrick converted for 17-0. 17mins.

Just minutes later Enfield extended their lead. Playing with a penalty advantage following a high tackle and a good Berkay surge, the ball was moved through Kaiden, Donie and Hayden who went close. The ball was retained and passed to Kaiden to score. 22-0. 19mins.

Enfield were also committed in defence against a physical Basildon team. After several opposition carries were repelled the ball was brilliantly ripped by Adam. First Patrick, then Kaiden made yards. Hayden then popped up like a graceful no.13 slicing through centre field to dive over. 29-0. HT

The first half had seen a good blend of forward power, with backs then taking advantage of space out wide. The second period was barely seconds old when rugby’s simple recipe was served up again. Chenitha made an immediate impact with a diagonal run through centre field. Adam won a turnover and then Sammy getting on the ball for the first time duly scored, running around the Basildon defence. The three lads involved in the try had just entered the fray too. Alfie had his head down in his notepad totting up the score (must have been hard with a hangover) and totally missed Patrick’s conversion. The gallery enjoyed that. 36-0 27mins.

Shortly after it was 43-0. Adam picked up from the base of the scrum and made ground. Chenitha passed to Patrick who fed Sammy who ran around the Basildon defence for his second try in five minutes. 30mins.

Enfield did have some defending to do. Some good tackles kept Basildon at bay. However they scored on 41mins when one of their big forwards broke three tackles to score under the posts. 43-7 41mins.

It was great to cap a memorable performance by seeing Matteo back on the field for his first minutes since the autumn. We also welcomed Lamont to Ignatians for his debut. Three times he got his hands on the ball and showed plenty of power, pace and potential. He also scored the final try! Pouncing on a bouncing ball he set off through the defence and even dummied one more defender when over the try line to dot down.

50-7 Full Time

Our thanks to a Dusty and his team for making the trip and we look forward to seeing them again next season.
