It proved another tough day at the office for Enfield Ignatians and, in a game in which their mistakes came back to haunt them, they found themselves cast 60-19 adrift at the final whistle as ruthless Hammersmith and Fulham IIs cashed-in at windswept Donkey Lane, writes Jonathan Landi.
Unlike the game against Harrow, Ignatians failed to trouble the scoreboard in the first-half due in large part to the fact that they were playing into the elements, and their lack of cohesion and precision was exposed in the form of a 31-0 half-time deficit.
Given a mountain to climb, Ignatians were far more fit for purpose after the interval, and although they failed to make the most of the elements, they did at least fashion a fight back in the form of three tries against decent opposition.
In fact, they may have rescued something of out of the game in the dying throes, but the all important fourth try that would have yielded a point went begging, as a forward pass crucially scuppered their ambitions in this area despite working up a fair head of steam .
Dynamic number eight Sam Rushmer was the first to cross. Having landed a brace against Harrow, he continued his rich vein of form by charging over from close range after the hosts capitalised on a sustained period of pressure.
Luke Roper followed suit with the eagle-eyed scrum-half catching the visitors’ off guard after darting his way over without barely a finger laid on him by virtue of taking a quick tap penalty.
Ignatians will also be pleased with the displays of their Academy graduates such as Harry Newbery (Man of the Match) and Dalton Nsimbe, who crowned his second senior appearance with his side’s third try after another multi-phased attack. It was worth remembering that Dalton Nsimbe was a complete newcomer to the game prior to joining the EIRFC Senior Academy last November.
Dan Shaw, deployed in the unfamiliar role of fullback and playing out of position in common – a fate that befell other senior players - added two conversions for good measure.
Enfield Ignatians, having lost their two opening league games, host Old Millhillians at Donkey Lane on Saturday October 17.
