HARROW 17 - ENFIELD IGNATIANS 36

ENFIELD IGNATIANS, buoyed by a fine display by Man of the Match Dan McDermott, made a flying start to their London Two North-West campaign by progressively dismantling Harrow 36-17 as the visitors bagged on all five points on offer.

Ignatians made a dream start when a neat box-kick, chased by Wes Warren, sent alarm bells ringing in the Harrow defence. The forwards continued to crank up the pressure before a neat reverse down the blindside enabled prop Josh Webb to crash over on three minutes. Jake Bates added the extras.

However, this prompted a positive response from Harrow and, ten minutes later, a neat show and go by the fly-half resulted in a converted try under the sticks.

Both sides traded penalties in the run-up to the break when the match was still finely poised at 10-10.

However, Bates will be particularly pleased by his effort as his 35-metre strike was against the wind.

Harrow also shot themselves in the foot and their continuing ill-discipline saw them reduced to 12 in the early minutes of the second-half, when both half-backs joined the number eight, who was yellow-carded in the run-up to half-time, in the sin-bin.

Consequently, Ignatians weren't about to let a golden opportunity pass them by. Exploiting the numerical superiority, the backs cut loose before winger Hadee Fayaz finished off in the corner.

Sensing that attack was the best form of defence, Ignatians kept up the pressure from the kick-off, and their handling skills again came to the fore when new recruit, Archie Wilkins, deftly finished off as the blue and golds snared a useful 14-point lead.

Ignatians were blighted by a dose of yellow card fever themselves after losing a player to the sin-bin and, ten minutes later, Harrow were back in contention after successfully running a close range penalty.

The successful conversion trimmed Ignatians' lead to seven minutes. However, it may well have been the short, sharp shock needed, as the determined visitors remained the masters of their own destiny following a grandstand finish in the last first ten minutes which yielded a brace of tries.

Patiently constructing via their forwards, Ignatians sealed the bonus point on 70 minutes when some neat interplay entailed loose-forward, Ethan Renny, playing in fly-half Jordan Wilson.

Bates continued his imperious kicking-form by adding a fourth conversion before the visitors

ended in style in the dying throes of the game, when strong-running from the Frank Antwi, Luke Stack and Aaron James-Nicholls, asked serious questions of the Harrow defence.

The ensuing successful farming of the blindside, enabled Warren to run in from 20-metres as Ignatians successfully avenged last season's agonising last-minute defeat in the corresponding fixture.

Captain Jake Bates said: "It was a very well deserved victory which stemmed from a positive attitude and mental mindset. We played some great rugby and, hopefully, we can take this into our next game."

Ignatians entertain Hampstead at Donkey Lane on Saturday (September 16).
