The threes had an embarrassment of riches at their disposal, and consequently the quality of the raw material available with a number of former colts swelling the ranks, enabled the blue and golds to eventually land a runaway win against neighbouring Haringey.

However, some things never change and Chris Byrne, a regular try scorer if ever there was one, heralded the start of the fightback after the loose forward fashioned a typical pushover score to peg back the scores back to 7-5 after the visitors had gone a converted try up within 15 minutes.

From then on, life simply got better for Ignatians and a couple of tries from the outstanding Nick Saunders, plus scores from Dan Jones, Henry Pritchard, Steve Emery and Anthony Langan, sealed a big win.

Part of the vintage colts' side of 2007-08, Saunders was moved by captain Bish Galloway from fullback to scrum-half with appreciable results. "He scored a fine individual try as well as linking up well with the rest of the team. He pretty well ran the show and also added the kicks," said the skipper.

Last season's colts' captain Henry Pritchard also crossed the whitewash and was by all accounts chuffed by the experience.

Galloway added: "It was nice to see so many new faces and the youngsters coming through, including George Rutt. They bring a lot of enthusiasm to the team and are very keen to attack with the ball in hand."

The captain also sounded a note of warning. "At times there are too many dog legs when we moved up as a line because of the varying fitness levels within the team, and it's something we need to pay attention to. We were also a little rusty in the opening 15 minutes before warming to the task.

"Although it's nice to have a big squad at your disposal and we now need to focus on a tough opening league fixture against Tabard IIs. We need to concentrate on winning something this season, either the league or the cup."
