Ignatians Make Dignified Cup Exit

It was a bit of a masked ball situation but the Ignatians' third team - or was that the fours masquerading as the threes - made a splendid fist of carrying the torch in the away cup showdown at Tabard.

In a game of high drama, visiting Ignatians, who welcomed back injury returnee Bish Galloway, will reflect that things didn't quite go their way, and after having a player sent-off midway through the second-half, they could still have won this had James Power not missed a conversion and a penalty late in the game.

Still, it seems unfair to heap everything on the shoulders of one man particularly as Power did his bit for the cause by claiming the visitors' first of three tries, although some incisive work from Galloway preceded the score; Damon Rodney also went very close to collecting.

It was a score that enabled Ignatians to stay in the touch, and, after trailing at the break 12-5, Ignatians must have sensed the game running away after Tabard exploited the Cobden Hill arena to add a further try and a penalty to forge 20-5 clear.

This proved to be the cue for a tremendous fightback and Damon Rodney certainly got his just desserts by claiming a try his efforts deserved. Power added the extras.

Ignatians had another go and hit the target for a third time via Chris Byrne. Still, Ignatians exit the cup competition with their heads held high, and congratulations go to all those who stepped up. The club is proud of you.
