The Threes' dreams of salvaging something out of a disappointing season went out of the window as a rampant Hitchin proved far too good in the Plate semi-final at Donkey Lane.
The home forwards proved more than a match for their counterparts. Otherwise, it was an all too familiar tale of the opposition backs having a field day as the visitors built up a healthy half-time lead.
Ignatians' response was timid in comparison as they could only fall back on a Richard Carroll penalty, although the hosts did manage a consolation try in the second period via Asher Gordon, which was successfully converted by the versatile Chris Byrne.
Third bottom in their league this season, the Threes, although having mathematically avoided relegation from Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two, will be plying their trade in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Three next term.
The club decision is based on the premise that the environment in the current league could prove even tougher because certain higher up the league clubs will be running extra teams next team. Furthermore, it is felt that Merit Table Three will be a far more conducive environment to building a better and stronger side for the future.
