Report by Jonathan Landi

The threes, buoyed by the pre-season win against Weston, continue to rumble along strongly and their collective strength proved far too much for Black Horse to handle. Captain Steve Renny, who took a knock to the head, summed up the Hertfordshire away display: "It was a great start to the season."

Consequently, recollections of the game have been a little fuzzy. So we are happy to set the record
straight and it was Michael Davies who was Ignatians' top try scorer with four touchdowns.

Other try scorers, where known [sic}, were James Okoro (two), Dave Korthal and Adam Collins (two)

At times the visiting Blue and Golds took their foot of the gas and were made to pay for their laxness,
but for the main they always had their destiny in their own hands, and consequently they were able to
equal the feat of the ones by running in nine tries,

In a squad boosted by returning club stalwarts Sam Barnes and Rob Gardener, and the addition of the new recruit and prop Paul Davis, Ignatians' powerful pack put Black Horse on the rack and, with space opening up out wide, the likes of Davies and Okoro in particular.

Paul Duke played his part by adding nine points via the boot.

Not that Ignatians had it all their own way. They were ill-disciplined at times and, with the first-half penalty count mounting up, Black Horse took heart and fashioned a couple of tries of their own as they reined-in the blue and gold lead at half-time.

Some choice words by captain Steve Renny at half-time galvanised the blue and golds, and with efficiency again becoming the byword, the pack re-doubled their efforts and put their spirited opponents to their sword.

The captain, feeling distinctly sore after the game following a painful clash of heads with an opponent, said: "It was a good start to the league. It was great to be able to welcome back some old faces (see above) plus Paul Davis who has joined from Old Albanians. I'm confident that we will be able to further strengthen the squad in the coming weeks.

"That was our first league game. We don't have a fixture this weekend but we will be entertaining St Albans IIs on September 26th."
