It would so easy to file the final result under the heading of another comprehensive defeat. However, the threes showed character in adversity by toiling away manfully from first to last and, granted a little more luck, they could even have stolen a try at the death. It didn't help that, with the game barely 15 minutes old, experienced prop Bob Ridley was forced off because of a back injury, and with the match going uncontested, the blue and golds played most of the game with 14 men.

Captain Steve Renny said: "We have playing all the decent sides in the league and Luton proved to be very decent opposition. The thing that pleased me most is that the side tackled heroically throughout and, had we not, we probably would have conceded 60 to 70 points instead of 39."

The spirit coursing through the side was also manifest in the final minute when, by rights, a knackered Ignatians should have put themselves out of their misery by hoofing the ball into the sanctity of touch, and thus drawing a line under what had been a tough afternoon. Instead, the never say die attitude coursing through the side rose its head and Ignatians, gamely, had one last stab. It almost succeeded as the Ignatians' centre rode three tackles. However, the move died a heroic death and was snuffed out following a good tackle from the Luton fullback.

Nobody would have begrudged Ignatians the try. However, it was Luton, with their powerful pack and hard-carrying prop, which ruled the roost and their final haul of five tries, four of which were converted, and two penalties, was eloquent testimony to their dominance.
