THREES HAVE A VERY HARD DAY IN THE OFFICE
ENFIELD IGNATIANS IIIs 5 FINSBURY PARK IIs 69
It would be tempting to paraphrase the film title that this was no country for old men, or ageing rugby players for that matter, but were it all so simple. Still the mood in the camp was buoyant after the game and, if anything, the assorted blue and yellow throng might have drawn inspiration from ‘The Life Of Brian’ by breaking into a chorus of ‘Always look on the Bright Side of Life’.
However, there’s no escaping the disparity in physical condition, as the Finsbury whipper snappers gave Ignatians the run around on their home patch.
Nowhere was this more evident than in the make-up of the side, which saw the blue and golds take to the field with a near full complement of 14, but, more pertinently, 12 of these were forwards.
Consequently, this was always going to a tough slog in the heat, although their heads never dropped and captain Steve Renny had his moment in the sun after a powerful forward drive took play close to the line, before the skipper spotted a gap in the defensive line and rumbled over.
Not one to let the grass grow under his feet, the captain has been promised reinforcements for his next game, and he is confident that this is just a temporary blip. Better days ahead.
