Many thanks to Chris and the Verulamians team for their hospitality and for sorting out a pitch at the shallow end of their playing fields !! Despite the terrible rain over the preceding few days, the kids had a blast and didn’t let the weather conditions dampen their spirit or their desire to play full-on rugby.
The first game started well and Enfield were only two tries down at half time having contested well at the set-pieces and breakdowns and defended with heart against a very well organised Old Vs attack. However, the second half saw our defence lose shape as Old Vs turned up the pressure in attack and upped their intensity in defence. Game highlights were few and far between for Enfield, but Max Getling made sure the Enfield Rifles made it onto the score-sheet with a typically forceful charge from a breakdown. Bailey Borg-Thomas also made his Club debut in the second half and special mentions should also go to Louie Rodman and Myles Powell who worked hard in defence whilst William Gallo and Austin Lutwyche were always willing ball carriers, despite some very heavy tackles coming in from the Old Vs forward pack.
The second game saw Enfield continue to struggle to contain the Old Vs attack despite some courageous tackling and competition at the breakdown from the forwards in the shape of Cameron Kennedy, Jack Newbury, Liam Dixon and Nathan Clifford. Meanwhile, Elliott Ullah also continued to disrupt at the maul and invariably came away with possession or at the very least, slowed down the opposition ball. However, Old Vs came out worthy winners although Austin Lutwyche did manage to cross the whitewash once which was a fair return for his ball carrying efforts throughout the day. Anthony Corbett, Joe Sear and Oliver Bourton also continued to threaten with the ball in hand, but space was at a premium, and the defensive line speed of Old Vs meant that our chances to attack with the ball out wide were very limited.
The last game followed the same pattern as the previous two with Enfield unable to break down the well organised Old Vs defence whilst Enfield were always stretched as Old Vs ran hard in attack and spread the ball wide once Enfield had committed to the breakdown.
Old Vs were worthy winners, but the games were all keenly fought, the tackling was hard, the breakdowns were contested with aggression and desire and both teams showed total commitment from start to finish. Old Vs won and won well, but Enfield never gave up and made the opposition work hard for every point. You might not get points for effort in rugby, but from a coaching and spectators point of view, never giving up, playing the game with a smile on your face and working as hard for your team mates as possible is definitely a solid foundation on which to build for the future.
