OCTOBER 11: GIRLS EXCEL/THE SENIOR ACADEMY AND U13S MAKE STATEMENTS OF INTENT

(Girls rugby October 11) It wasn’t just the boys which excelled last weekend as both Enfield Tigers teams recorded wins.

No final score was reported for the U12s age group, but I’m reliably informed that Tigers-Finchley cluster won their game against Welwyn.

The Enfield Tigers U16s were well on top in their home game as they mastered visiting Fullerians 61-21.

(OCTOBER 11) The EIRFC Senior Academy side (pictured) continue to show good unity of purpose and they made the perfect start to their Herts-Middlesex Colts Division Three league campaign by mastering Barnet in a hard-fought derby clash 24-14 at Donkey Lane.

Ignatians dominated the early collisions and they drew first blood after Hayden blasted his way under the sticks, before Barnet, invariably a handful with the ball in band, drew level.

The blue and golds similarly prospered in the wide channels and well-worked tries on each flank from Cian and Ollie G (who also landed two conversions) gifted the fired-up hosts a 19-14 half-time lead.

The second-half became a bit more attritional with both sides guilty of not making the final pass count, as Barnet, despite being down to 13 at one point, stubbornly dug in as the game developed into a veritable arm wrestle.

The dog-fight also had its moments of magic with Ignatians, throwing caution to the wind, by even having the audacity to counter-attack from their own line, and distilling an audacious loop move into the attacking blend for good measure, as they sought refuge in attack.

Remaining true to their attacking DNA, Ignatians eventually made the game safe as they worked the ball to the far touchline before some nifty footwork from Josh, having come off his wing and twice stepped his man, made the game safe by scoring the all-important fourth try.

Coach Steve Corcoran said “I’m delighted with the result and, while there are things to work on, this was an impressive performance given the squad’s lack of game time and the amount of disruption to our preparations. I’m excited to see what this group can achieve with continued commitment.”

Rob ‘Hold The Back Page’ Painter will provide further and more in-depth analysis of an compelling game later in the week.

(U13S) County protocols prevent us from reporting the scores of U13s Pool E game, but the outcome of their first ever league game when they were pitted against a combined Ealing Trailfinders B side resulted in a positive outcome for the blue and golds.

A well-drilled side, under the direction of former club president Martin Baker, showed the benefit of warm up games against Cheshunt and Datchworth, by deftly exploiting the wide channels, making their tackles and being forceful at the breakdown.

The pleasing snap and crackle led to scores for Keyan, Matthew and Lucas, with Junior securing the Man of the Match accolade [as determined by the opposition}.

Martin Baker said: “It was a great start to our league campaign and [it was] really pleasing to see an open game of rugby, especially in the first-half. The team is improving each week and that bodes well for [the rest] of the season.”

A lot of credit must be given to Ealing Trailfinders as they, too, showed some deft touches in an entertaining game blessed by warm sunshine.
