OCTOBER 17-18: SENIOR ACADEMY DOMINATE/U14S/FIRST TEAM SYNOPSIS

(October 18) The EIRFC Senior Academy lorded their rearranged first round National Cup game against Welwyn 48-7 at Donkey Lane, and consequently they will face Woodford in the next round.

In a game in which Ignatians were always in the driving seat, the home side’s potent blend of physicality and soft hands shone to the fore as they scored four tries in each half to run out handsome winners.

Setting their stall out early and tackling everything that moved, Ignatians had plenty of attacking momentum and Henry, Ollie G, Donie and Cian all crossed as the rampant hosts established a 26-7 half-time lead.

The pick of the tries proved to be Ollie G’s outrageous chip and chase effort.

Ignatians took a while to get going in the second-half, and one must credit Welwyn for digging-in, but eventually the dam did burst with Tommy fly-hacking through for the fifth, before Donie doubled his haul after successfully isolating the last line of defence.

Donie completed his hat-trick by selling a neat dummy on his way to the try line, before the energetic Baris, a player bedding-in really well at hooker, was rewarded for his high work rate by cutting loose and handing off the final defender for try number eight.

Ollie G (three) and Sammy added three conversions between them.

Well done to the whole squad, and particularly the pack en bloc which dominated its opposite numbers, with the industrious Hayden gaining good yardage with some forceful carries, in addition to providing a key link between backs and forwards.

Coach Steve Corcoran said: "Our attacking flair in the first-half was matched only by the defensive doggedness in the second. It was great to see the boys enjoying their rugby."

Rob ‘Hold the Front Page’ Painter will provide a more in-depth match report about a very entertaining game later in the week.

(U14S) The Enfield Ignatians U14 will reflect that they were 3-2 up on the try count in their league game against visiting Verulamians at the break following tries from Freddie H, Noah and Eddie - with George adding a conversion.

The second-half was a different story, though, as the visitors were able to defer to a very strong bench, and consequently the tide turned in their favour, having crossed the whitewash five times without reply.

Still, coach Scott Fitzgerald was satisfied on a number of counts, and in game featuring debutant Xavier, he signalled out fullback Rocco for special praise in tandem with the tackling machine and Man of the Match Liam.

(Senior rugby October 17) ENFIELD IGNATIANS paid the price for a poor start but they did at least pick up a point in the 73-27 home defeat to Old Millhillians in the Counties Two Middlesex clash at Donkey Lane.

After an even first ten minutes, Ignatians’ porous defence was brutally exposed by the fired-up visitors whose scoring spree resulted in a 59-5 half-time lead, with Dalton Nsimbe’s try one of the few bright spots of the half.

The second-half, in marked contrast, was much better as a far more cohesive Ignatians rallied and the results were tangible as they engineered four tries via Sam Rushmer, Liam Horn, William Halstead and Carl Asare-Anderson.

Seyi Adeosun was the Man of the Match.

The latter also added a conversion as Ignatians’ ability to salvage a point enabled them to move off the foot of the table in advance of the away derby against Saracens Amateurs on October 23. The latter is a Friday night game.
