The Enfield Tigers certainly made hay while the sun shone at the Woody 7’s (May 1-4) after their U14s and U16s age groups both won silverware at the popular Derbyshire tournament at Weston-on-Trent.
The U16s set the seal on a very successful occasion after dominating Medway Magic 40-22 in the Plate final.
The Tigers certainly sharpened their claws on the big occasion, with a hat-trick of tries from Victoria E, added to touchdowns from Rosie J and Rei, underpinning a decisive win.
The pathway to the final saw the north Londoners gain respective 38-12 and 45-19 wins over All Stars and Lichfield Greens, before fighting out a 7-7 draw (Hana was the scorer) with the Gloucester Meteors.
Amy, Mollie, Victoria E, Emily, Pretty and Sophia all crossed in the All Stars’ win, whereas Pretty (two), Rei, Victoria E, Rosie J and Hana all got on the scoresheet in the Litchfield Greens’ game.
They suffered their only loss against the Pink Warriors, having been shaded 17-14 in a thriller, but the silver lining came in the form of Plate final success.
The climax of the two-day tournament for the U14s proved an emphatic 31-5 success over Maidenhead Guins in the Bowl final, having laid the foundations in the pool stages with wins over the Pink Warriors (29-19) and Beckenham (22-14).
They slipped up for the only time against a strong ATL outfit (33-5), but their overall record propelled them into the Bowl semi-final against 5VV which they dominated by a resounding 66-10.
The Tigers also fielded an U12s team. County protocols prevent us from reporting on their scores but they certainly played some very good rugby.
The very successful Woody’s 7s is now in its ninth year and, such is its popularity, that attendance has rocketed past the 1,000 mark, having progressed from the low hundreds mark.
